A friend of mine is having a sweet baby girl soon and I wanted to make her something special. Since she only has boys at home I wanted to make her something extra frilly and girly!! And this ruffle edged crochet baby blanket pattern is just what I was thinking!

Finished blanket measures approximately 28 in. × 28 in.
With your worsted weight yarn, make a magic ring (as an alternative to the magic ring method, you can ch 4 and join in furthest ch from hook to form a ring.)
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 3, *3 dc in ring, ch 3, repeat from *twice more, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 12 sts.
Round 2: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, ch 1 *[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, rep from * twice more, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 24 sts.
Round 3: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 36 sts.
Round 4: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc , ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 48 sts.
Round 5: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc , ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 60 sts.
Rounds 6 through 19: Continue pattern and color sequence as done in previous rounds, adding an additional repeat of “3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1″ along each side for each round ending with 228 sts, or until desired size (note that you will need additional yarn and fabric if making a larger blanket).
Do not fasten off. Continue with Edging below.

Edging
Since the fabric ruffle might tickle under a baby’s chin, I only worked it around three sides of the blanket, and I worked a crochet edge with the worsted weight yarn along remaining side (see pattern below).
Setup: Continuing with your worsted weight yarn from Round 19 of the blanket pattern above, Sl st in next 2 sts and in each of the 3 ch of corner.
Row 1: Working in back loops only this row, ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 1 hdc in each st and ch across, ending with last st in first ch of corner ch-3 sp, turn (remember we are only crocheting right now across one edge of the blanket) — 77 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 1 hdc in each st across, turn — 77 sts.
Row 3: Working in back loops only again for this row, ch 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in each st across — 77 sts.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
The remaining three sides will be edged with our fabric yarn. Work 1 sc in the back loop only of each st and ch around the remaining three sides.
To single crochet with the fabric, start with first loop of fabric on your hook, *insert hook in back loop of st, pick up next loop from fabric and pull through, pick up next loop of fabric and pull through both loops, repeat from * for remaining sts.
Fasten off and snip excess fabric.

Thanks for the pattern. Great idea I really like the matterial bought lots of colors they’re in my stash. I’ve beeb trying to decide what to do with them besides ruffled scarves. Which are going out of style.
Terina says
I cant figure this one out. Why are you working in the round if it looks like two triangles that were worked in rows? I really do much better seeing this done like watching a video.
Kara says
Hi Terina 🙂 This blanket is not two triangles worked in rows but a large granny square worked in rounds. Hope that helps 🙂

For the edges you actually use a product called sassy fabric. I never heard of it. Where can I find it
Kara says
Yep, it is called Sassy Fabric and it is made by Red Heart Yarns. You should be able to find it online or in craft stores. There should be an affiliate link at the bottom of my post if you are interested in purchasing it.

So when you do the granny square, you don’t turn the work with each round? Some folks have advised doing so, as whenever I have done this, my granny swirls a bit
Kara says
Hi Tracie 🙂 No, you don’t need to turn your work. Keep working with the right side facing throughout.
Charlotte Lorincz says
I love the blanket but got a little lost on how to crochet the fabric to the edges?
deb says
How much of the ruffle does it take?
Kara says
Just one skein 🙂
Tameka says
Hi! What yarn did you use for this? It came out beautifully!
Kara says
I believe it was Vannah’s Choice Baby for the center.
Tameka says
Thanks for the info! You inspired me to make a blanket for the newest member of my family. I’m using the neverending granny square. It’s pretty much the same as yours.
Robin says
Hi Kara, how many pkg. of sassy fabric did you use?
Lori says
Does the finished measurement include the ruffled edging? Also, is there a gauge to go by?
Kara says
Hi Lori 🙂 Yes, the measurement includes the ruffle. I did not work up a gauge swatch since it shouldn’t really effect the sizing too much.
Lori says
Hi Kara! Thanks so much for the info! I was also wondering when attaching the sassy fabric, will the blanket be facing on the right or wrong side?
Kara says
You will be facing the right side
Nancy Edenfied says
What is the name of the pink? I think it is very pretty
Kara says
Hi Nancy 🙂 Unfortunately I have no idea of the exact color. I had these skeins in my stash with no labels.

Hi: Do you offer visual tutorials (video) on your projects like YouTube? It would be a lot easier for me, since I am learning, if I could follow along a video. Thank you.
Kara says
I don’t have many yet

Do you have a video for rounds 1-3 Or so? I am a beginner at crochet and am more of a visual learner. I have completed round one but am confused on where exactly to finish it and how to start2and complete round 2.
Thanks in advance

How creative! I’m crocheting a granny square blanket for my granddaughter right now and this would make the perfect edging for it! 🙂
Kara says
So glad you like it, Lori 🙂

So nice, but I wonder what ever happened to pastel colors for babies.
Judy says
Pastel colors were for the moms. Babies actually respond better to bright colors.
Kara says
I did not know that. Very interesting!
Kara says
I still use lots of pastels for baby gifts, but thought this suited my friend better 🙂
Shar Perreira says
Love it thank you! What size hook are you using?
Kara says
An I hook 🙂
