Common Questions
Can I use worsted weight yarn for this pattern?
Yes! But you will need to double it up to acheive proper gauge. You can holding two strands of worsted weight yarn together as a substitute for chunky yarn. The doubled yarn essentially creates the thickness of a bulky category.
Why is my sizing different?
For fitted items, it’s especially important to make sure your gauge matches the guage listed on the pattern (see pattern notes below). If your mittens are coming out smaller than desired, try using a larger hook size or worked up the next size of the pattern. Vice versa, if your mittens are coming out too large, try a smaller hook size or the next size down of the pattern
PAttern Notes
Gauge = approx. 7 sts and 8 rows in 4 in. If your individual tension differs, please adjust hook size for proper gauge.
Finished mitten sizes as written:

How do you make the right hand mitten? Do you use the same pattern and let the seam cut across the palm?
Emily says
I’m a bit confused – I don’t see where a thumb hole is made.
Kara Gunza says
Hi Emily 🙂
The thumb opening is made in Round 4 (for small), Round 5 (for medium), Round 6 (for large).

This is a very cute pattern! However, I have to wonder if I am doing it wrong… I made the large size for my brother-in-law and when I sewed the cuff closed, I can just barely squeeze my hand through. I don’t think there is any chance he will be able to wear these. They are adult sizes, right? I just love the look of them but unfortunately I think I need to find something else to make for my BIL! Thanks for the pattern anyway!
Elaina says
I had the same issue, I made them for my mom but when she put them on her fingers poked through! I ended up pulling it apart so I didn’t waste any yarn because I don’t know anyone they would actually fit.
christine says
Just one thing I noticed: In the small mitten pattern, in the beginning Round 3, there may have been a “2 sc in same stitch” missing…? Sts don’t increase from 10 sts to 12 sts with only 1 increase in the round.

Good grief lyndell, regarding your comment. Why don’t you keep your sour thoughts to yourself? We all have bad days. If you can’t say something good, keep it shut.

+1!!!

i hate chunky yarn it is a cheat from start to finish. it is lazy and unskilled spinning and needlework. it shows lack of skills and appears infantile. yes you 2 year olds scribbling is wonderful but only to you. i was originally just deleting emails with chunky wool or patterns but it has become an epidemic. anyone who has ever willingly used chunky/bulky yarns should be forced to work with nothing but lace weight for a year!!!!!
Kara says
Wow, I am definitely sensing a strong dislike for chunky yarn. Perhaps you would prefer one of these lace crochet patterns: https://www.petalstopicots.com/tag/lace/
