Work up this crochet chicken pattern to add some easy farm friends to your decor. I love how adorable my little crochet chick looks propped on my kitchen windowsill!
I found these adorable fabric bean bag chicks on Gluesticks Blog and envisioned them as cute little Spring pets to decorate my kitchen. But since you already know I don’t drag my sewing machine out often, I decided to crochet them instead. And there was hatched (ha ha) this cute crochet chicken pattern.

These are lovely!! I was trying to create my own pattern of triangle chickens but it didn’t turn out right 😉 Yours are perfect. Do you mind if I sell chickens made using your pattern?

I just started learning how to crochet about two weeks ago, and I appreciate how easy this pattern is to follow.
I’ve learned that I’m a tight crocheter, and I think that’s why I was having a little trouble with the head detail. To fix mine, I made four triple crochets instead of three double crochets, and I think it turned out great!
I also read someone else’s comment about adding scalloping for tail feathers, and it was such a cute idea!
Thank you for such a simple, easily customizable pattern. I’ll definitely come back to find more ideas!
Joanne Nunziante says
How adorable these are! I had some scraps of the cotton yarn left from another project and made one mama and one baby…and then I made one mid-sized one by chaining 14 to start and doing 33 rows. I added a scallop for tail feathers to close. Love them all!
Kara says
What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing!
Agape says
Hello-
I’m confused about what happens after the 38 rows are crocheted…if I slip stitch the ends together, then I will have two openings and have no idea how the chicken ends up in a triangular shape. Will you please help! Thank you!

This is adorable! I made some of these for a 2 year old cancer patient who loves chickens! He is bed bound and plays games with these as well as lines them up and says goodnight! I am always so grateful for people like you who share their talents and patterns for free. Blessings.
Kara says
That warms my heart to hear! Prayers for healing for your sweet little friend!
Lisa says
Thanks so much for sharing about the pattern on Instagram. We buy farm raised eggs from a lady who works in an office setting. This will be a great thank you gift to her as a paperweight. (I crocheted her egg coasters last year). Bless you for sharing you work.
Kara says
What a nice idea!!

Hi, Kara. I think these would also be great microwave ‘hot pads’! Have you ever seen them? They are like little hot pads for your fingers to take hot dishes out of the microwave! I think, if you just don’t sew up and fill them, that these would be great for that. The only ones I’ve seen have been just plain. 😉
kerrie says
love your little chickens! Unfortunately mine failed! I tried making the smaller chicken … not sure how to assemble!
sawcat says
I am going to have to find something a bit more weighty and make a few of these for my mom. She loves chickens, and these would be good weights for holding open cookbooks, with the right fill.
Kara says
What a great idea!

Just finished the mom and baby chic, and gave them to a neighbor 2 floors up, started laundry, then sat down to have another look at my little chicken.I accidentally hit the X button which deleted it!! So I’ve come back for another copy. I’m not selling anything. I’m just generous, and also blind and batty! You really hit a nerve in the public.Chickens make a kitchen seem homey, even if you live in the city. And a lot of people have a little yearning to live in the country, with a backyard full of chickens, impossible as that might be.Your pattern is very sweet.Didn’t take long to do-just the perfect pattern for me! Thank you so much, and please forgive my double-dipping into your little chickens! Sincerely,Barbara Burdick

Would you consider doing a post on how to read the crochet symbols in your little drawing? You explain stuff so well!
Kara says
Hi Jessica 🙂 Yes, those symbols can get confusing! Here is a link that helps translate them 🙂 http://www.petalstopicots.com/resources/stitch-chart-symbols/

I admit I’m not too computer savey, but I refuse to print a pattern that has, like, 10 pages of comments. I love your pattern too, but I wouldn’t want someone using up valuable ink and paper to print my comment in order to get the pattern.
Kara says
Hi Ruth 🙂 I have a print button at the bottom of the page that only prints the post itself. It even allows you to delete photos or extra text you don’t want. Hope that helps.
Amy says
Thank you for this pattern! We recently lost one of our chicks…my 4-year-old’s favorite one. 🙁 I made her one of these (but added little wings and feet ) for her to hug whenever she’s missing her “Buttercup.”

Hi Kara.
Your beanbags are gorgeous. I made similar crochet easter chicks last year for Easter and wish I had thought of using them as paper weights.

ADORABLE! My daughter made these out of flannels and feathers for me some years back. You might want to try what she did and string them in a line up-down and use beads in between. Just the cutest thing ever to hang in the kitchen corner! Thanks for the conversion. She’s going to get one in return now 🙂
Kara says
They sound so cute!! I hope your daughter likes it 🙂
