Step up your next crochet scarf project with color and texture! This Mod Cluster Stitch crochet scarf pattern is made up of double crochet clusters worked in rows of color changes. Of course you could also work the scarf in one color, but I must say it’s so much fun playing with color combinations (think ombre, coordinating, contrasting colors!!). And when you’re done, be sure to crochet up the matching Mod Cluster Stitch Hat for a matching set!
I have included patterns for three crochet scarf sizes below … adult, child, and toddler. However, it’s super simple to customize the pattern to any size you need.

Mod Cluster Stitch Crochet Scarf Pattern
Here is what you will need:
- US H-8 / 5 mm crochet hook
- 3 to 5 colors worsted-weight yarn (approx ½ skein ~ 100 yds each; shown here in Berroco Comfort)

Gauge: 7 clusters and 7 ½ rows = 4 in.
Sizes: Adult/Teen (finished length = approx. 58¾ in. without fringe, 68 in. with fringe; 6 in. wide) Child (finished length = approx. 41½ in. without fringe, 50 in. with fringe; 5¼ in. wide) Toddler (finished length = approx. 28 in. without fringe, 36 in. with fringe; 4 in. wide)
Three double crochet cluster (3dc-cl): Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat 2 more times (4 loops will be on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Notes on changing colors: CA = Color A, CB = Color B, CC = Color C, etc. To change colors, complete the joining cluster in the same color used for that round. Introduce the new color by pulling a loop of the new color through the loop on your hook (counts as 1st chain), make 3 more chains to complete the ch-4 noted at the beginning of each round. You will notice that the first chain will be the color used from the previous round; pull gently on the tail of yarn from the previous round until the chain becomes hidden inside of the joining cluster. Continue working the clusters of the new round over the yarn tail for a few stitches to anchor it as well as hide it.
