This hat is so much fun to crochet! The pattern consists of crochet cluster stitches with round upon round of beautiful color. This hat pattern offers the perfect opportunity to play with your favorite yarn colors or even use up some bits from your stash.
Cluster stitches may seem intimidating at first but you probably already have all the skills necessary to make it. A cluster stitch is basically a set of stitches worked in the same stitch and joined together during the last yarn over to form a cluster. For example, for the 3 double crochet cluster stitch used here, you would start working a double crochet stitch but stop before the last yarn, repeat that twice more (there will be 4 loops on your hook), and then yarn over and pull through all 4 loops to create a cluster of double crochet stitches.
Still sound confusing? No worries, I wrote it out step by step in the pattern below. And if you are looking for something a little more basic, try my Easy Crochet Hat Pattern here.
I have included three hat patterns below, ranging in fit from toddler to adult sizes. Not sure what size to make? You can reference this Hat Size Chart for the average head circumferences per age as well as suggested hat measures to fit each size.
Here it is in the child size with a matching scarf (you can find the free Mod Scarf Pattern here!) …

How to Work the Crochet Cluster STitches
Three double crochet cluster (3dc-cl): Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat 2 more times (4 loops will be on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Joining cluster (join-cl): Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat 1 more time (3 loops will be on hook), insert hook into beginning chain-4 space, pull up a loop and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Notes on changing colors: CA = Color A, CB = Color B, CC = Color C, etc. To change colors, complete the joining cluster in the same color used for that round. Introduce the new color by pulling a loop of the new color through the loop on your hook (counts as 1st chain), make 3 more chains to complete the ch-4 noted at the beginning of each round. You will notice that the first chain will be the color used from the previous round; pull gently on the tail of yarn from the previous round until the chain becomes hidden inside of the joining cluster. Continue working the clusters of the new round over the yarn tail for a few stitches to anchor it as well as hide it.
