Preemie/Newborn Turtle Crochet Hat Pattern

- G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook
- 2 small black buttons
- Stuffing

Staring with Fern yarn, ch 3
Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)
Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join in top of first dc (30 sts)
Rounds 4-6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Legs (Make 4)
Starting with Fern yarn,
ch 2
Round 1: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (5 sts)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (9 sts)
Rounds 3-10: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc (9 sts)
Round 11: ch 1, sc dec around 4 times, join in first sc dec, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (5 sts)
- stuff legs with stuffing
- with Fern yarn and a yarn needle
- attach the legs to the 2 front sides, and 2 back sides of hat, toward the ribbing of hat
- weave ends
Head
With Fern yarn, ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (7 sts)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (13 sts)
Rounds 3-5: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc (13 sts)
Round 6: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (13 sts)
- stuff head with stuffing
- with Black yarn and a yarn needle
- stitch a smile and 2 eyes between rounds 1-3
- with Fern yarn and a yarn needle
- attach the head just above the ribbing, front and center of hat
- weave ends
Shell
(I made 7, but you may want to only want to use 4 for the small sizes.)
Starting with Kelly Green yarn, ch 2
Round 1: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (6 sts)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (11 sts)
Cut yarn and change to Sweet Pea yarn.
Round 3: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in first sc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (16 sts)
- with Sweet Pea yarn and a yarn needle
- attach the shell pieces to the top of the hat (I didn’t stitch the shells together, just to the hat) I’ve added a visual guide below using the pattern I used
